About Where's My Refund?
Where's My Refund? is a service provided by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that allows taxpayers to check the status of their tax refunds. This article will provide you with information on what is available through the service, how to use it, and what information is not available.
What Information is Available?
You can start checking on the status of your refund through Where's My Refund? based on the following timelines:
- Tax Year 2023 return: Within 24 hours after e-filing

- Mailed return: 4 weeks after mailing
Once your return is processed and your refund is approved, Where's My Refund? will provide you with a personalized refund date. The tracker displays progress through three stages:
- Return Received
- Refund Approved
- Refund Sent
To use Where's My Refund?, you will need to provide the following information:
- Social Security number or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN)
- Filing status
- Exact whole dollar amount of your expected refund
Additionally, Where's My Refund? will display the refund status of the tax year you choose. If you need other return information, you can view it in your Online Account.
What if My Refund was Lost, Stolen, or Destroyed?
If your refund has been lost, stolen, or destroyed, you can file an online claim for a replacement check. However, you can only do this if it has been more than 28 days from the date the IRS mailed your refund. Where's My Refund? will provide you with detailed information about filing a claim if this situation applies to you.
