About Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement

The Form W-2, also known as the Wage and Tax Statement, is a document that employers are required to file for each employee who receives remuneration of $600 or more for the year. This includes both cash and noncash payments. The purpose of the Form W-2 is to report the employee's income and the taxes withheld from their wages.

Who Must File Form W-2?

Every employer engaged in a trade or business who pays remuneration to an employee must file a Form W-2. This requirement applies even if the employee is related to the employer. The following conditions must be met for an employer to file a Form W-2:

  1. Income, Social Security, or Medicare tax was withheld from the employee's wages.
  2. Income tax would have been withheld if the employee had claimed no more than one withholding allowance or had not claimed exemption from withholding on Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate.
